Michael Cusacks hurling team made a perfect start to the
2002 season when they wiped out all the disappointments
of 2001 by winning the annual Central Coast Tournament.
At a sun drenched San Remo on Sunday 24 March the red army
of hurlers ousted the reigning champions Shamrocks with
a scintillating performance. Right from the start it was
championship hurling at its best with no side prepared to
give an inch. Both sides traded points before a soft goal
from a Donal Mulcahy free gave Cusacks a half time lead
of 1-3 to 0-3. In the middle of the defence the towering
J P Riordon (hurler of the tournament) was a colossus and
he was ably assisted by Kevin Kellaher and Pearse Kennedy.
With Donal Mulcahy unerring with his frees (with 1-7 to
his name) and the wiley Sean Fitzgerald causing havoc, the
Shamrock defence was under constant pressure. The silken
skills of Jason Barrett at midfield gradually wore down
a gallant Shamrocks side who were well beaten long before
the final whistle. It was a fine team performance and the
final score was 1-13 to 0-7. The team on the day was Denis
Barry (Limerick), John Ahern (Cork), Conor Bourke (Limerick),
Ivan O'Brien (Limerick), Kevin Kelleher (Cork), J P Riordon
(Cork), Pearse Kennedy (Limerick), Jason Barrett (Cork),
John O'Donoghue (Tipperary), Tom Walsh (Cork), Donal Mulcahy
(Cork), Sean Fitzgerald (Limerick), Donal Ryan (Limerick),
Denis McAuliffe (Cork), Willie O'Brien (Waterford). Sub
used Noel Dillon (Limerick) for John O'Donoghue (injured).
Eddie Maloney from Ardpatrick, Limerick is manager of the
team. He is passionate about the game and is hopeful that
2002 will see the hurlers bring home more silverware.
