Cusacks mens football team competed again this year in the
Central Coast Tournament on Sunday 24 March. Having won
the tournament in fine style last year they had high hopes
of putting back to back wins together. In the first game
they played a strong Young Ireland side. Cusacks were captained
by the East Cork man Paul Kilbane form Aghada who played
at center back in the heart of defence. The team consisted
of players from every province in Ireland as well as some
Aussies and had a good mix of strength, skill and pace.
Following a close game a draw on the day was a fair result.
In the second and deciding game a large win was required
to make a place in the final and the team certainly were
up for the challenge playing Irish Rovers. The team led
well by half time and ran out with a 13-point win but sadly
it was not enough to secure a place. They were very disappointed
not to make the final but will bounce back with renewed
vigour for the rest of the year. Michael Cusacks football
team has a long and proud tradition and players from all
over Ireland play with them. Cork men like Eamon O Malley,
Brian Daly, Olan Burke, Paul Kilbane, Mark Twomney and Padraig
Hurley play up the middle of the park. The addition of the
Rahilly cousins from Waterford is a big asset. Men from
Limerick like Conor Bourke and Eamon Scallard shore up the
defence. The nippy Darren White, Declan Garry and Shane
Malone are always dangerous in front of goal. They had their
best ever season last year when they won 3 out of the 4
NSW GAA tournaments and they hope to build on this. A lot
is expected from the new influx of players and Mayo man
and trainer Paul Convey is optimistic for the forthcoming
season. The Club is looking forward to this new season and
hope that new players will join, for the social aspect,
as well as the training and playing
