2002 Mens League Football Final Report

Cusack's Footballers Relinquish League Title

Unfortunately Young Irelands denied Cusacks a historical League clean sweep. The final game of the day proved highly entertaining with Young Irelands running out winners by 1-9 to 1-4 in a keenly fought contest. Last year’s winners, Cusacks started well and a Cusacks treble in all three codes looked like it might have been on the cards. Cusacks opened the scoring with a well-taken goal by Paul Maher and little separated the teams at half time. With the teams level at 1-3 to 0-6 the turning point came with ten minutes to go when Young Irelands got a goal. Cusacks rallied and replied immediately with a point but despite the best efforts of Paul Kilbane in midfield, Brian Smyth at wing back and Brian Daly and Conor Burke in defence they could not make up the deficit. However, despite the loss, trainer Brendan Coleman is confident that brighter days are ahead for this team.
