Michael Cusack
footballers fail at final hurdle
Young
Ireland put paid to Michael Cusacks treble dream in the
men's football championship final at Princes Park in Auburn
on August 18, 2002. The ladies and hurlers had completed
a creditable double for club by winning their respective
finals earlier on in the day but the dream treble was not
to be.
Young Ireland stamped their authority on the game from the
very start and by half time had built up a 7 Point lead.
The second half followed a similar pattern and despite their
best efforts Cusacks struggled to get into the game.
Cusacks hard work in the second half was rewarded when Brian
Daly scored a well earned penalty but it was just before
the final whistle and was little more than a consolation
for the reds who ended up losing by 2-14 to 2-3.
For Cusacks Paudie Hurley played his heart out while Ray
Donovan and Sean Hayes did well in the backs.
