Cusacks ladies made a wonderful start to the Central Coast
Tournament on Sunday 23 March with two great wins. Playing
in torrential rain at San Remo the girls first encountered
the Irish Australian girls and cruised to a 4-10 to 2-1
victory. They then had a great win over their arch rivals
Clan na Gael. In a very hard fought game they came out winners
by 3-5 to 0-11.
They
again played Clan na Gael in the final. Clan were eager
to avenge the defeats of previous years and Cusacks were
hoping to make it a famous six-in-a-row of Central Coast
Tournament victories. Unfortunately, it was not to be. After
suffering the loss of captain Niamh Bonar through injury
in the previous game Cusacks tried hard and gave it their
all in a tumultuous struggle. Despite their best efforts
in the driving rain they ran out losers by 2-5 to 2-7.
There
were some fine performances from new players - Susan Birmingham,
Sinead Mahon and Sinead Gordon. The veterans and last year's
contingent also excelled on the day. Tireless running by
mid-fielders Sinead Griffin and Mary Sexton and excellent
play in attack by Ruth Cahalane, Wenona McBride and Daveena
Doyle almost swept Cusacks to victory. Credit is also due
to team coach, Quanah McBride for his help and to the whole
squad of players, who made the journey up the coast.
