Cusack ladies were the only club representatives on Championship
Finals day at Princes Park in Auburn on Sunday 14 September.
This was very unusual for a Club, which usually contests
all three finals in every competition every year. Unfortunately
Cusack Ladies failed to retain their Championship trophy.
Once again they came up against old foes Clan na Gael. Cusack
ladies played with the aid of a strong breeze in the first
half and it was level pegging at half time with Cusacks
scoring 1-2 and Clan replying with 5 points. Cusacks were
unlucky not to score at least 2 more goals but hopes were
high at half time that victory would come their way. Clan
were fortunate enough to hit a purple patch mid-way through
the second half when they scored a few vital points. On
the other hand Cusacks found it hard to come to terms with
the now gale force wind which was in their faces and eventually
lost a very hard fought game by 0-11 to 1-3.
Despite
a huge effort from mid-fielders Katie McDermott and Sinead
Griffin. centre half back, Roisin Cooper and newly fledged
goalie Sinead Gordon the Cusacks ladies found it hard to
get the ball up to their forwards where Niamh Bonar, Carol
Redmond and Sinead McMahon tried hardest.
The
Cusack girls could not be faulted for lack of effort. The
team had trained hard for this final but winners they were
not to be. However, captain Sinead Griffin and coach Quanah
McBride are optimistic for the future and for glory in 2004.
Team
and subs on the day were as follows:
Sinead Gordon, Betty Servis, Dee Stephenson, Laura Connolly,
Mary Sexton, Rosin Cooper, Bernie O'Donnell, Katie McDermott,
Sinead Griffin, Ruth Cahalane, Daveena Doyle, Carol Redmond,
Wenona McBride, Sinead McMahon and Niamh Bonar.
Subs: Kate Radcliffe, Neryl Mather, Yvonne McGonagle, Sorcha
O'Brian, Maria Flynn and Kristy Flanagan
