It was left to the gallant Cusack
hurlers to bring home the silverware from the Central Coast
tournament at San Remo on Sunday 21 March 2004. First off
they encountered newcomers to NSW GAA, Craobh Padraig and
despite a head injury to Tom Fehin who had to go to hospital
for stitches were victorious by 2-6 to 1-5.
They
qualified for the final against their old rivals Sydney
Shamrocks by beating the Central Coast in their second game
by 3-7 to 0-12.
The
final against the Shamrocks was always going to be a tough
one but on the day Cusacks were up for it with every player
playing his heart out till the final whistle. With the wind
behind them for the first half and some fine performances
all over the field they lead Shamrocks by 2-7 to 1-8 at
half time. Great goals by Paul Shanahan and Michael Hickey
and some fine points by Neil Ronan helped them build up
this crucial lead. That man Ronan kicked off the second
half by adding a great goal to his tally and despite being
against the wind time and time again the defenders excelled
by clearing the sliothar out of defence. The final whistle
was greeted with delight, as Cusacks were gallant winners
by 3-13 to 2-12. Ably captained by Ivan O'Brien from Limerick
this was fine display from the boys in red. In a game of
high quality and intensity there were many heroes on the
day and none more so than Patsy Cahill from Limerick who
deservedly won the player of the final award. Manager Nelius
Murphy was more than happy with his charges and celebrations
continued long in the night. The team which successfully
regained the coast trophy, which they last won in 2002 was:
