| 2003:
THE SEASON THAT WAS: |
|
The
almost never-ending GAA season in NSW ended on Sunday
14 of September with the NSW GAA Championship Finals
in all three codes. Unfortunately this was the year
of the drought in the Cusacks Club with only the ladies
team togging out on finals day. The hurlers were beaten
by the Central Coast in their semi final on the previous
Sunday as were the lads who failed to get past Clan
na Gael despite the brilliant performance of Niall
Douglas. The girls put up a good show again Clan na
Gael in their final but unfortunately went down by
1-3 to 0-11.
However,
it wasn't all doom and gloom and our lads did win
the pre-season up the coast competition, which was
held in Gosford in March. Ably captained by Cork man
Brian Daly and coached by Darren Kierse they produced
a great performance to beat Penrith Gaels in the final
by 3-4 to 0-5. They also contested the League Final
at Auburn but were beaten by old foes Clan na Gael.
The ladies contested all 3 finals during the year,
which bears testament to the hard work put in by all
the players and team coach Quanah McBride.
The hurlers started out well and initially had large
attendances at training. Unfortunately they suffered
the same fate as the other two teams as numbers at
training dropped drastically. Despite the huge effort
put in by Neilus Murphy and Conor Bourke they had
one of their quietest seasons on record.
Despite
the lack of silverware this year there were some positives.
Friendships were formed, outings were arranged, sessions
were organised and lots of team bonding happened.
There is an air of optimism and confidence for brighter
days ahead - Cusacks will be back - sure the only
way is up!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
